Stretching Hair Without Heat

Many women love their natural hair, but do not like to wear their hair in its shrunken state all the time. There are also women that like to prevent single strand knots that come with constant wash and go’s and limit heat use to prevent heat damage. Luckily, there are several ways you can stretch your natural hair WITHOUT using heat. Please keep in mind, in order to get the best effect of stretched styles you must make sure your hair is fully dry. Below are 3 methods that I have used to achieve a stretched style on my natural hair.

Curlformers:
Curlformers are available for short, medium and long hair and used on all hair types. Application and take down are fairly easy, using the right method. You can purchase official Curlformers at Sally’s Beauty Supply. For those of you that like a deal, there are “dupes” on eBay and Amazon called Magic Leverag. I STRONGLY advise you to use caution if purchasing from these online resellers. There are several blog posts and YouTube reviews of Curlformers vs Magic Leverag online; just do a search when making your decision.

Braids and Twists:
This is possibly the most common method used amongst naturals. Simply put the hair into medium to large braids or twists and wear in a braid out or twist out. If this is done after washing, larger twists or braids can be done and kept in overnight. You can also braid or twist on dry hair after moisturizing for manipulation to stretch the hair more.

Banding:
Banding is when you use rubber or elastic hair bands to stretch out the curls in your hair. You have to first comb out sections of hair and then place a hair band around it to make a small pony tail. Each section is banded a few more times to secure in place until the whole head is banded.

What are some heatless methods that you use to stretch your hair?

I get a great stretch with the curlformers. I absolutely love them. When I do them right, it looks like I have a press and curl. Now I just have to figure out how to maintain the curls for more than a day. My hair, however, remains stretched for several days when I use them. I love this product.

I love them too! Haven’t used them in a while, but they worked very well for me when I transitioned.
