Today was the last day of NYC Dance Week so I attended Soca Dance with La Shaun Prescott at the Mark Morris Dance Center. My cousin is a teacher at Elle in Trinidad, so attending the class was a form of support for the company.
About Soca Dance Class
Soca dance is a fun dance workout accompanied by Soca music. The class starts with a short warm-up, basic moves traditionally done to Soca music (wining and other body isolations) and end with a short sequence of choreography. Previous dance experience not required. Jazz sneakers recommended. Open to participants at all fitness and dance levels.
Elle NYTT is a dance company founded in 2007 by La Shaun Prescott. After touring with Machel Montano (the top Soca Artist in the world) from 2007 – 2012, La Shaun expanded her dance company to NYC, teaching Soca Dance classes weekly at the Mark Morris Dance Center.
This class was much like the Soca AFRO-bics class I took a couple weeks ago. It included body toning, cardio and a choreographed routine to Destra Garcia’s “Mash it Up”. LaShaun’s instructions were easy for non-dancers to learn. It was LaShaun’s last time teaching in New York, but Candace Thompson will be the instructor starting in July. I hope to attend another class in the future.
