5 International Museums and Tours Focused on Black History

5 International Museums and Tours Focused on Black Culture

Last year, I shared a list of African American Museums in the US Focused on African American History and it was well received on social media. Celebrating Black History Month this year, I’m sharing options for your next international trip. If you have an interest in black history and culture, here are five international museums and tours to keep in mind.

Black Paris Tours – Paris, France

Before canceling my Paris trip, I wanted to do a day trip Black Paris Tours. Their mission is to “provide travelers with information, insight and little-known facts about the wealth of Black history in Paris.” Nothing wrong with wanting to see the Eiffel Tower and learning more about Josephine Baker on the same trip.

Kurá Hulanda – Willemstad, Curaçao

Located in a former slave yard, visiting the Kurá Hulanda in Curaçao was an awesome experience. The mission of Kurá Hulanda is to “…exhibit collections related to the cultural identity of the people of Curacao, the Caribbean, and the Atlantic Rim.” The museum showcases exhibits like “The Origin of Man”, “West African Empires”, and a beautiful sculpture garden. Learn more about the resort and museum at kurahulanda.com.

House of Slaves – Dakar, Senegal

A little bit of an emotional trip, the House of Slaves is a museum and memorial to the Atlantic slave trade on Gorée Island, off the coast of the city of Dakar, Senegal. Walk through the Door of No Return, a final exit point of Africans sold into slavery. Gorée Island Island is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

International Slavery Museum – Liverpool, UK

The International Slavery Museum shares information on both historical and present-day slavery. It aims to “address ignorance and misunderstanding by looking at the deep and permanent impact of slavery and the slave trade in Africa, South America, the USA, the Caribbean and Western Europe

Afro-Cuban Religion Tour – Havana, Cuba

Since we’re going to Cuba in May, my cousin and I may go on an Afro-Cuban Religion tour. The tour is two hours, kid-friendly and covers Afro-Cuban religions practiced in Cuba. After taking a Caribbean music class and learning basics, it’ll be good to get a perspective from Cuban locals.

This was really cool to learn about because I always thing of Black history as it relates to the US. So to see this internationally is eye opening. I really want to travel to Cuba and hopefully check this out.

These are great suggestions for tours when traveling. When we go to London in April, we’re doing the Black London Tour. I believe my husband already booked it.
